La mappa
Kyela Map Poster & Print
Kyela is in the far south-west of Tanzania, in the Mbeya Region, a short distance from the northern shore of Lake Nyasa, which is also known as Lake Malawi. The land here is low and flat, a plain crossed by rivers flowing down from the highlands to the lake. On a map the town sits among these waterways, with the lake's broad outline taking up the southern edge of the frame.
The district is best known in Tanzania for its rice, and the level, well-watered ground around the town explains why. From above, the streets form a loose, open network rather than a dense grid. Main roads run out towards the lake shore, the surrounding villages and the border with Malawi, which lies close by to the south-east.
A Kyela map poster captures the town where it meets the landscape: a scatter of streets, the winding lines of rivers and the calm expanse of the lake. Rendered in black and white, the composition is spare and balanced. The water gives it a strong horizon, and the town reads as a small, settled point on the edge of one of Africa's great lakes.

Rivers across the plain
Several rivers wind across the flat ground towards the lake. On paper they appear as meandering lines that cut through the fields and give the map its sense of movement.
Open street network
Kyela's streets spread out loosely rather than packing into a tight centre. The result is a light, airy pattern that contrasts well with the solid mass of the lake.
