Syr Darya bends
The river curves past the city in broad loops. Its sandbars and side channels give the map its most organic shapes, in contrast to the straight streets.

La mappa
Kyzylorda Map Poster & Print
Kyzylorda lies on the lower Syr Darya, the river that once fed the Aral Sea, and water shapes its map. The river bends past the city in wide loops. A network of irrigation canals fans out across the surrounding land, where rice has long been a major crop. The city itself is laid out mostly on a regular grid of broad streets and long blocks.
The Kokand Khanate founded the town as a fortress called Ak-Mechet in the early nineteenth century. Russian forces took it in 1853 and renamed it Perovsk. In the 1920s it briefly served as the capital of the Kazakh Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, before the seat moved to Almaty. Its present name is usually translated as red capital.
Beyond the city the land is flat and dry, and the Baikonur Cosmodrome lies in the same region, further along the Syr Darya. A Kyzylorda map poster shows a clear, orderly plan set against the meanders of the river and the fine lines of the canals. It is a quiet picture of a city made possible by water in a dry land.

Street grid
The central streets follow a mostly regular grid of wide avenues and blocks. This planned layout reads clearly and calmly from above.
Irrigation canals
Around the city, canals and field boundaries form a fine geometric mesh. They are the traces of a rice-growing landscape carved out of the dry steppe.
