La Mesa lies east of San Diego, in the hills that rise from the coastal plain. On a map its street pattern is a mix of grids and curves: older neighbourhoods near the village centre follow a regular layout, while residential streets on the slopes wind around the terrain. Interstate 8 cuts through the northern part of the city.
Known locally as the Jewel of the Hills, La Mesa has a walkable downtown village and is served by the San Diego Trolley. Lake Murray, a reservoir with a surrounding park, lies on its northern boundary, and the rounded summit of Mount Helix rises just to the east.
