La Tortuga lies in the Caribbean north of the Venezuelan mainland, west of Margarita. It is one of Venezuela's larger islands, but it is low, dry and sparsely inhabited. From above it is an elongated shape with an irregular coast: sandy points, shallow lagoons and nearby cays that seem to break away from the main island.
The island is part of Venezuela's Federal Dependencies. There is no real town, and visitors are mostly fishermen and people arriving by boat or light aircraft to spend time on its beaches. The water around it is shallow and clear, with reefs and sandbars near the shore.
