Lancaster sits in the Antelope Valley in northern Los Angeles County, on the western edge of the Mojave Desert. The valley floor is almost level, and the city is laid out on a grid of major roads spaced a mile apart. The east-west avenues are named by letter, while the numbered streets running north-south are labelled east or west of a central line. The result is one of the most regular street plans in California.
Each square mile looks different inside. Some are filled with tract housing that curls into cul-de-sacs, while others are still open desert or farmland. The Antelope Valley Freeway runs north-south through the city, and the downtown stretch of Lancaster Boulevard forms a short, walkable spine.
