Leça do Bailio is a parish in the municipality of Matosinhos, just north of Porto. On a map it is part of the continuous built-up area around the city, but it has its own centre and a clear natural line: the river Leça, which winds through the parish on its way to the Atlantic at Matosinhos.
The parish is known for the Monastery of Leça do Balio, a Gothic church with a fortified tower and battlements that was once the Portuguese seat of the Knights Hospitaller, which is where the name's bailiff title comes from. On the sheet, the monastery sits close to the river among a mix of older houses, newer housing and green patches along the water.
