Leer lies in East Frisia, in the northwest of Lower Saxony, on the river Leda just before it joins the Ems. The map is shaped by water: the Leda curves along the southern edge of the old town, a harbour basin reaches right into the centre, and the broad Ems runs to the west. Around it, the land is flat, divided by drainage ditches and long straight roads.
The old town gathers around the harbour, with narrow streets and gabled houses close to the quay and the town hall facing the water. Leer is often called the gateway to East Frisia, and it is closely linked with the region's strong tea tradition; the Bünting tea company has its home here.
