La mappa
Lemont Map Poster & Print
Lemont lies southwest of Chicago in Illinois, in the valley of the Des Plaines River. On a map, the valley floor carries a remarkable group of parallel lines: the river, the historic Illinois and Michigan Canal and the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. The older town rises on the bluff above them, with streets climbing the slope.
Lemont grew with the building of the Illinois and Michigan Canal in the nineteenth century. The area became known for its limestone quarries, and Lemont stone was used in several Chicago buildings, including the historic Chicago Water Tower. Old stone buildings and churches still stand in the downtown area.
A Lemont map poster shows a town shaped by transport and stone. The canals and river form a strong band across the sheet, while the residential streets on the bluff create a more intricate pattern. In black and white, the layered waterways become the defining feature, clearly showing how the town grew beside the routes that connected Chicago to the Mississippi.

Lemont limestone
Local quarries produced the stone used in several Chicago buildings, including the Chicago Water Tower, and quarry lakes are still visible nearby.
Bluff-top downtown
The historic centre sits on rising ground above the valley, where older streets and stone buildings climb away from the canal corridor.
