Krya springs

La mappa
Livadeiá Map Poster & Print
Livadeiá is the capital of Boeotia, set where the mountains meet the broad plain of central Greece. On the map the modern town spreads in a fairly regular pattern across the lower ground. To the southwest the streets narrow and climb toward a rocky gorge, and the Herkyna river emerges from it to run through town.
At the head of the gorge are the springs of Krya, surrounded by plane trees, old watermills and a stone bridge. In antiquity the area was known for the oracle of Trophonius, one of the most famous in Greece. Above the gorge stands a castle built in the medieval period, when Catalan rulers held the region.
A Livadeiá map poster sets the tight, winding lanes near the springs against the straighter streets of the newer town. To the east lies the flat land of the former Lake Copais, drained in the nineteenth century, whose ruled field pattern gives the edges of the map a calm, geometric order.

Castle hill
The medieval fortress crowns the rocky height above the gorge. On the map it is a compact outline surrounded by steep, empty ground.
Copais plain
East of town, the bed of the drained lake is divided into long, straight fields and channels. These form a striking contrast with the hillside streets.
