Valley settlement
The town follows the narrow level ground of the valley, giving it a long, compact shape. Its outline is set by the mountains rather than by any planned grid.

La mappa
Longjing Map Poster & Print
Longjing is in the far northeast of Chongqing municipality, in the mountainous region around the Yangtze's Three Gorges. The land here is steep, and the map shows it. The town stretches along whatever narrow, level ground the valleys allow. Roads switch back and forth to climb the slopes, and settlements cling to terraces and ridges.
In this landscape, a road is never straight for long. Routes into and out of the town follow the contours of the mountains in long loops and hairpin bends. The surrounding countryside is a mix of forest, terraced farmland and scattered villages linked by narrow tracks.
A Longjing map poster is shaped almost entirely by the mountains. The town is small and compact, and it is surrounded by winding roads and wide blank areas of steep terrain. In black and white, it becomes a strong and intricate composition. It suits people with family ties to this part of Chongqing.

Switchback roads
Roads climb the slopes in tight loops and hairpins. They trace intricate lines across the map that show the steepness of the terrain far better than any contour line.
Mountain terrain
Steep, largely unbuilt slopes fill much of the frame. The open space highlights how small and concentrated the settlement is within its landscape.
