Los Andes lies in the Aconcagua river valley in central Chile, near where the plain meets the high Andes. The city was founded in 1791, and its centre still follows a clear square grid around a main plaza. The river runs along one edge, and vineyards and orchards fill the surrounding valley.
The city has long been the gateway to the main road crossing to Mendoza in Argentina. The route climbs up the valley to the Cristo Redentor pass and on toward the Portillo ski area. Los Andes is also closely associated with Saint Teresa of the Andes, whose shrine lies nearby.
A Los Andes map poster balances order and landscape. The regular grid fills the centre, the river curves along its side, and roads lead away up the valley toward the mountains. The peaks are not drawn, but you can sense their presence in how the city stops at the valley walls.
