Macapá is the capital of the state of Amapá, in the far north of Brazil. It lies on the northern bank of the Amazon River near its mouth, where the river is so wide the far shore is barely visible. From above, the city follows a mostly regular grid of streets that runs back from the long waterfront into low, flat land.
The equator passes directly through the city. A monument called Marco Zero marks the line, and the local football stadium, known as the Zerão, is built so that the equator runs across its halfway line. Macapá has no road connection to the rest of Brazil, so the river is still its main link to other cities.
A Macapá map poster is shaped by the water. Along the riverfront stands the Fortaleza de São José de Macapá, an eighteenth-century Portuguese fort with a star-shaped plan that is clearly visible from above. Inland, small streams and wetlands break up the grid and mark the edges of the city.
