From above, the town sits in a narrow valley between bare mountain ridges. The road and the railway run through the valley together, and the town's streets gather along them.
The railway through the Bolan Pass is a well-known feat of engineering, climbing through tunnels and bridges on its way to Quetta, and Mach is one of the towns along it. The surrounding area is also known for coal mining. The landscape is dry and rocky, and the ridges limit how far the town can spread.
