Machida lies on the south-western edge of Tokyo, and its outline is one of the more distinctive on the metropolitan map: the city pushes south like a peninsula into Kanagawa Prefecture, bordered for much of its length by the Sakai River. This shape has made Machida the subject of a long-running joke among Tokyo residents that it really belongs to Kanagawa.
The centre is built around Machida Station, where the Odakyu line and the JR Yokohama line meet, and the streets around it form a dense commercial knot of shopping arcades and department stores. Away from the station, the pattern changes quickly. The city spreads across the Tama Hills, and planned residential estates follow the contours of ridges while valleys hold narrow roads and streams.
Large parts of the northern city remain wooded, with parks, temples and farmland scattered between the housing. On a Machida map poster, this gives an interesting contrast: a tight, busy core around the railway, curving suburban roads on the slopes, and quiet open spaces where the hills have been left largely alone.
