Mafikeng, officially spelled Mahikeng, is the capital of South Africa's North West province. It lies near the Botswana border. From above, the older town is a compact grid beside the Molopo River, and the government centre of Mmabatho, built in the 1970s and 1980s, spreads out to the north with broad roads and large institutional sites.
Around the two centres, townships and suburbs fill the open savanna, their streets laid out as long curved blocks. The Molopo is a modest river, but it marks the southern edge of the old town clearly. Railway lines and main roads run out toward Gaborone and Johannesburg.
A Mafikeng map poster captures a town best known for the Siege of Mafeking of 1899 to 1900, during which Robert Baden-Powell commanded the garrison. His experiences there later influenced the founding of the Scout movement.
