Maguan lies in eastern Gansu, on the Loess Plateau, a landscape of deep yellow soil carved by water into steep gullies, ridges and valleys. Towns here usually sit on the flatter ground of valley floors, and their shapes follow the terrain closely. Streets run along the valley, squeezed between rising slopes.
The hills around the town are shaped by generations of farming, with many slopes cut into terraces to hold soil and water. On a detailed map, the roads that climb out of the valley wind back and forth, while the town itself stays long and narrow.
