Country-town grid
Straight streets crossing at right angles make up the older centre. In print, the regular blocks give the poster a quiet, architectural rhythm.

La mappa
Makwassie Map Poster & Print
Makwassie is a small town in South Africa's North West province, in the flat maize and cattle country of the western Highveld. The land around it is open and gently rolling, so from above the town sits as a compact, clearly bounded shape surrounded by large farm parcels and long straight district roads.
The older part of town follows an orderly grid of blocks, a layout typical of South African country towns founded in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A stream, the Makwassie Spruit, winds past, its bends contrasting with the right angles of the streets. Separate residential areas lie a short distance away, a pattern shaped by the country's planning history and clearly visible on the map.
A Makwassie map poster records the whole arrangement in fine black lines: the grid, the stream, the outlying neighbourhoods and the roads leading out across the veld. It is a modest, honest picture of a rural town, well suited to anyone with a connection to it.

The spruit
A small stream winds along the edge of town, and its loose curves are the one soft line in an otherwise geometric plan, drawing the eye across the composition.
Roads across the veld
Long, straight routes leave town across open farmland, and the empty space between them shows how isolated and spread out Highveld settlements are.
