Enclosed lagoon
A large central lagoon fills much of the island's interior. It has no open channel to the sea, so on the map it appears as a closed inner shape.

La mappa
Malden Island Map Poster & Print
Malden Island is an uninhabited coral island in the Line Islands group of Kiribati, far out in the central Pacific. Seen from above, it is a low, roughly triangular rim of land around a large, shallow and very salty lagoon. The lagoon has no open channel to the ocean. There are no roads and no harbour, and the vegetation is low.
In the nineteenth century the island was worked for guano, and remains of that trade are still scattered about. Earlier Polynesian visitors left stone platforms and structures that puzzled the first Europeans to arrive. In 1957 Britain used the area for its first hydrogen bomb tests and set off the devices high in the air offshore.
Today the island is a protected wildlife area and an important home for seabirds. No settlement has lasted here, so almost every line on the map was drawn by nature. A Malden Island map poster turns this remote shape into a quiet abstract: a pale ring of land, a wide lagoon and empty ocean on every side.

Low coral rim
The land is only a few metres high: a narrow band of coral and sand around the lagoon. Its outer coastline is smooth and gently angled.
Seabird refuge
The island is protected for its nesting seabirds. With no roads, buildings or piers, the map is almost entirely free of human lines.
