Mandelia lies in the Chari-Baguirmi region of Chad, south of the capital, on the flat floodplain of the Chari River. From above, the town is a low, open pattern of compounds and sandy lanes. The river makes the strongest line in the frame, bending past the settlement on its way north toward Lake Chad.
The land here is almost level, so the map is shaped by water rather than by hills. Seasonal channels, low islands and the braided margins of the Chari change from wet season to dry. In black and white, these soft riverbanks set against the tighter grain of the town give the composition a quiet, horizontal rhythm.
