Manises lies just west of Valencia, on the south bank of the Turia River. Its map combines two very different shapes. There is the irregular centre of an old Valencian town, with narrow streets around the church. Next to it are the long, precise lines of Valencia Airport, which sits largely within the municipality.
The town has been known for ceramics since the Middle Ages. Manises lustreware, glazed with a metallic sheen, was traded across Europe, and the craft continues in local workshops and a ceramics museum. The old potters' quarters make up part of the dense historic core.
