Mao is the capital of the Kanem Province in western Chad, north-east of Lake Chad. From above, the town sits in a landscape of low dunes and dry valleys, where the edges of settlement are soft and open rather than hemmed in by rivers, coasts or hills.
The street pattern is loose and wide, with blocks of compounds and sandy lanes that thin out gradually into the surrounding terrain. Tracks and roads lead away across the plain toward neighbouring towns and villages, giving the map a sense of distance and space that is typical of the Sahel.
