The town grew along the Mombasa–Nairobi highway, and on the map its streets and buildings gather close to this road before thinning into farms and bush.

Trucks, buses and travellers stop here, and trade serving the road is an important part of the town's economy, alongside farming and livestock in the surrounding area.
