Marshall Map Poster
Marshall is the seat of Harrison County in East Texas, close to the Louisiana border. It grew as a nineteenth-century railroad and trading town. It is home to East Texas Baptist University and to Wiley College, a historically Black college whose debate team inspired the film The Great Debaters. Each winter the Wonderland of Lights festival decorates the historic courthouse and downtown.
The map centres on the courthouse square, and a regular grid of downtown streets extends from it in every direction. Railroad lines cut through at angles, a reminder that the town was a Texas and Pacific Railway hub. Farther out the grid loosens into residential streets, and creeks, pine woodland and highways toward Longview and Shreveport break up the surrounding land.
