Maţāy is a town in Minya Governorate in Upper Egypt, in the narrow strip of the Nile Valley where cultivation is squeezed between the river and the desert. From above, everything runs north to south: the Nile, the main railway line through the valley, the parallel roads and the canals feeding the fields.
The town itself is dense and compact, with narrow lanes packed around a few main streets, and the built-up edge meets farmland abruptly. Irrigation channels break the fields into long thin plots, and small villages sit along them like beads. It is a pattern repeated along much of the valley, but each town has its own outline.
