La mappa

Matsuyama Map Poster & Print

Matsuyama is the largest city on Shikoku, and its plan is organised around a single wooded hill. Katsuyama sits almost exactly in the centre, crowned by one of Japan's surviving original castles, and the streets fan out around its base in blocks that grow looser toward the edges. Tram lines loop past the hill and run east toward Dogo, giving the map a set of thin, curving strokes.

To the east lies Dogo Onsen, often described as one of the oldest hot springs in Japan, where the street pattern tightens around the historic bathhouse. To the south the Ishite and Shigenobu rivers cut broad channels across the plain, and to the west the city runs out to the port at Mitsuhama and the calm, island-dotted water of the Seto Inland Sea.

A Matsuyama map poster captures that balance of hill, plain and shoreline in line alone. The castle grounds read as a quiet open shape among dense blocks, the rivers as pale bands and the tram lines as fine threads. The city is also closely tied to the haiku poet Masaoka Shiki, who was born here, and to Natsume Sōseki's novel Botchan, which is set in Matsuyama.

01

Castle hill

The wooded hill at the city's heart holds Matsuyama Castle and its grounds. On the map it appears as an open, irregular shape ringed by streets, the fixed point every other line relates to.

02

Dogo Onsen quarter

East of the centre the tram line ends near Dogo Onsen, the historic bathhouse district. Its lanes are tighter and more winding than the grid below the castle, a small change of texture on paper.

03

Rivers to the sea

The Ishite and Shigenobu rivers cross the southern plain on their way west to the Seto Inland Sea, drawing long, straight-edged channels that frame the city's southern side.

Perché Matsuyama

Una mappa che ha un significato

People who have studied, worked or soaked in the baths here often want a reminder that is less literal than a photograph. The castle hill at the centre makes the composition instantly recognisable to anyone who knows the city, and quietly abstract to anyone who does not.

You can set your own title and subtitle, adjust the coordinates line, and pick from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download the HD files for $9 in six print sizes, or order a matte print, with an optional wooden frame, from a partner near you.
