McHenry sits in northern Illinois, about an hour northwest of Chicago, and its map is built around the Fox River. The river runs through the heart of the city, widening in places and pulling the street pattern toward its banks. Older blocks near the water keep a modest grid, while newer neighbourhoods further out loop into curving drives and cul-de-sacs.
North of town the Fox connects to the Chain O'Lakes, a string of linked lakes popular with boaters, and that watery character carries down into McHenry itself.
