Medina is a municipality in the northeast of Minas Gerais, in the Jequitinhonha Valley region, close to the border with Bahia. From above, the town is a compact settlement of short streets on rolling ground. The BR-116, the long road linking Rio de Janeiro to the Northeast, passes close by. Beyond the edge of town the map opens into hills, pasture and rural tracks.
The Jequitinhonha region is known for its semi-arid landscape and its ceramic and craft traditions. Its towns grew along cattle routes and later along the highway. Medina shares that character, with a modest centre, residential streets climbing the slopes and roads heading out to farms and villages in the surrounding countryside.
