Minas de Matahambre lies in the province of Pinar del Río, in the hilly country of western Cuba between the mountains and the northern coast. Unlike the flat grids of many Cuban towns, its layout follows the terrain, with streets and houses spread along valleys and hillsides wherever the ground allowed.
The town grew around a copper mine that opened in the early twentieth century and became one of the most important in the country. Its shafts reached great depths, and mining shaped the settlement for decades before operations wound down in the 1990s. Traces of that industry remain part of the local landscape.
