Mingora sits on the floor of the Swat Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, close to where the Swat River runs through the broad lower valley. Mountains rise on both sides, so the built-up area spreads mainly along the valley rather than outward. Main roads follow the river, and smaller lanes climb toward the foothills.
The town adjoins Saidu Sharif, the administrative centre of the district, and the two function almost as one urban area. The valley was an important centre of Gandharan Buddhism, and remains of stupas and monasteries survive in the area. Mingora is also the hometown of Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai.
