Mino sits where the Nagara River leaves the mountains of central Gifu and widens into a stony channel. On a map the town reads as a narrow band of streets pressed between the water and forested slopes, with roads following the valley rather than any imposed plan. Side valleys branch off into the hills, each carrying a thin line of road and scattered houses.
The town is best known for Mino washi, a handmade paper produced here for well over a thousand years; the Hon-Minoshi technique is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Its old merchant quarter is lined with udatsu, raised firewalls on the roof ends of townhouses, and the district's two parallel main streets, joined by short cross lanes, still form a compact ladder on the map.
