Monywa lies in Myanmar's Sagaing Region, on the eastern bank of the Chindwin River, northwest of Mandalay. From above, the town runs along the river in a fairly regular grid of streets, with a riverfront of landings and markets, and farmland spreading out across the plain to the east.
The Chindwin is wide here, with shifting sandbanks, and it forms a clear western edge on a Monywa map poster. Across the river, low hills hold the Hpo Win Daung caves, carved and painted with Buddhist images over centuries, and the large Letpadaung copper mining area.
East of the town stand some of the region's best-known religious sites, including the Thanboddhay Pagoda, famous for its many small stupas, and the huge standing and reclining Buddha figures at Bodhi Tataung. On the map, these appear as distinctive clearings and compounds among the fields.
