Valley setting
The town occupies relatively level ground among the ridges and gullies typical of the Loess Plateau, which keeps the built-up area compact and clearly outlined.

La mappa
Muhe Map Poster & Print
Muhe lies in eastern Gansu, in the heavily eroded landscape of the Loess Plateau. In this kind of country, towns tend to sit on valley floors or flat terraces, and roads follow the contours of the land instead of cutting straight across it. From above, the built-up area appears as a compact cluster, with lanes and farm tracks reaching out into the surrounding fields and gullies.
The terrain dominates any map of the area. Loess landscapes are defined by deep ravines, stepped fields and ridgelines that twist and branch, and the roads that link one settlement to the next have to thread along them. That gives the street pattern an organic, meandering quality quite different from the grids of the lowland plains.
A Muhe map poster is a quiet, abstract piece. The dense centre of the town contrasts with the thin, winding lines of the roads that leave it, and the overall shape is set by land rather than by planning. For someone connected to the place, it is a precise record of home. For others, it is a study of how settlements adapt to difficult ground.

Winding roads
Roads leaving Muhe curve with the terrain rather than running straight, drawing long, sinuous lines that give the map its character.
Farmland margins
Beyond the town, fields and tracks spread across the slopes, and the thin road network thins out gradually into the surrounding countryside.
