Mungaa lies in the Singida Region, in the dry heart of Tanzania's central plateau. From above, the town is a modest cluster of streets where a few main roads meet, surrounded by open land. Beyond the centre, homesteads and farm plots are spread widely, joined by tracks that branch and fork in an irregular pattern.
The plateau is broad and fairly flat, with the occasional seasonal stream bed crossing the land. Rainfall is limited in this part of the country, and settlement tends to follow roads and places where farming is possible.
