Mutare lies in a valley in Zimbabwe's Eastern Highlands, close to the border with Mozambique, and mountains surround it on almost every side. The centre is laid out on a neat colonial-era grid of wide streets and regular blocks. Around it, suburbs climb the lower slopes and spread along the valley floor, and the ridges form a natural frame.
The city grew as a gateway on the route between the interior and the port of Beira, and both the road and the railway still run through it on their way to the coast. Coming from Harare, travellers cross Christmas Pass before descending into the valley. To the south, the Bvumba mountains rise with forest and misty uplands.
