Akayu onsen district
The hot-spring quarter forms its own small cluster of narrow streets and closely set buildings, clearly separate from the wider road pattern around it.

La mappa
Nanyō Map Poster & Print
Nanyō lies in the Okitama basin in the south of Yamagata Prefecture, a flat valley surrounded by mountains. From above, the town looks like a patchwork. There are compact residential districts, long straight roads across the fields and, at the edges, forested slopes where the street pattern suddenly stops. The terrain sets clear limits on where the town can grow.
The best-known part of town is Akayu, a hot-spring district with a long history of inns and public baths. Nanyō is also known for its autumn chrysanthemum festival, and the gentle slopes around the basin are planted with orchards and vineyards, which is why local fruit and wine are well known across the region.
A Nanyō map poster captures a Japanese town between plain and mountain. The dense streets of the centre and the onsen quarter contrast with the geometric field roads of the basin, and the shape of a lake adds a calm open space. On paper, the transition from settlement to farmland to wooded hills reads clearly, like a cross-section of the valley.

Okitama basin fields
Across the flat valley floor, straight farm roads mark out rectangular plots, giving the map a quiet grid that ends where the land starts to rise.
Lake and hill edge
A lake opens up an empty shape among the streets, and the wooded slopes at the edge of the basin frame the whole town.
