Ndera is a sector in the Gasabo district on the eastern edge of Kigali, Rwanda's capital. On a map, the terrain explains almost everything. Roads follow the ridgelines, housing spreads along the slopes, and the valley floors stay mostly open as wetland and farmland. The street pattern isn't a grid. It traces the shape of the hills.
Rwanda is often called the land of a thousand hills, and Kigali shows why. The city is spread over a series of ridges separated by marshy valleys, and outer areas such as Ndera show that relief especially clearly. As Kigali has grown, new neighbourhoods have spread over these slopes, so the map mixes established tracks with newer, more regular streets.
