Needham lies about ten miles south-west of downtown Boston, and on a map its outline is shaped by the Charles River, which forms much of the town's boundary as it loops around the north, west and south. Inside that curve, residential streets wind over gently rolling ground, interrupted by ponds, conservation land and the straight lines of the commuter rail.
The town centre and Needham Heights each have their own small commercial cores near rail stations, a pattern typical of older Boston suburbs that grew with the railroad. Needham is also home to Olin College of Engineering, whose compact campus sits near the Wellesley line, and to a stretch of businesses along the Route 128 corridor.
