Neral is in Raigad district, Maharashtra, on the Central Railway suburban line out of Mumbai. It is best known as the starting point of the Matheran Hill Railway, a narrow-gauge line opened in 1907 that climbs to the hill station of Matheran. On the map, the railway is the town's backbone, with streets and markets gathered on both sides of the station.
East and south of town, the land rises quickly into the Western Ghats. The flat, dense grid around the station gives way to scattered housing and then steep, empty slopes. In recent years new residential developments have spread outwards, drawn by the suburban rail connection, so the map shows older lanes beside neat new building blocks.
