Nikkō covers a large, mostly mountainous area in the north of Tochigi Prefecture. The town centre is a narrow strip along the Daiya River. Its main street rises gently toward the forested shrine district at the valley's head. Beyond it, roads climb steeply into the mountains, and the built-up area thins quickly.
The shrine and temple precincts of Nikkō, including Tōshō-gū, the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The vermilion Shinkyō Bridge crosses the Daiya at the entrance to the sacred area. From above, the precincts show up as a cluster of paths and courtyards set among trees, unlike the ordinary street pattern below.
Further west, the famous Irohazaka road climbs in a series of hairpin bends to Lake Chūzenji and the Kegon Falls. A Nikkō map poster can frame the town and shrines closely, or pull back to show the river valley and the switchbacks rising toward the lake.
