Noisy-le-Grand sits on the eastern edge of the Paris region, in Seine-Saint-Denis, on slopes that run down to the Marne. It forms part of the Marne-la-Vallée new town, and its map holds two very different logics: the curving lanes of the old village near the river, and the large planned district of Mont d'Est, built around the RER A station and a regional shopping centre.
Mont d'Est is where the city became known among architects. Ricardo Bofill's Espaces d'Abraxas and Manuel Núñez Yanowsky's Arènes de Picasso, with its two huge disc-shaped towers, stand here. On a map their forms are unusual enough to register even as outlines: courtyards, crescents and geometric blocks that look nothing like an ordinary street plan.
