Ōme lies at the western edge of Tokyo Metropolis, where the Tama River leaves the mountains and enters the plain. The map shows a town stretched along the valley. Streets and the railway follow the river, and forested hills rise steeply on either side, leaving little room for expansion.
The town has a long history as a stop on the old road into the mountains. Its old centre keeps a retro atmosphere, with hand-painted cinema signboards that have become a local symbol. Ōme is also known for plum blossoms, which draw visitors each spring.
