Ono lies in the Harima region of Hyōgo Prefecture, north of Kobe and Himeji, on the banks of the Kakogawa River. The town spreads across the river valley, with a compact centre near the water and residential districts extending onto the gentle slopes around it. Rice fields and irrigation ponds fill the ground between neighbourhoods.
The city is known across Japan for its craft traditions. Banshū soroban, the wooden abacus, has been made here for centuries, and the area is also known for hand-forged blades and scissors. On the eastern edge of town, Jōdo-ji temple preserves a Kamakura-period hall that is designated a National Treasure.
