Otahuhu sits on the narrowest part of the Auckland isthmus. The Tāmaki River estuary, which drains to the Pacific side, lies to the east, and the Manukau Harbour, opening to the Tasman Sea, is only a short distance to the west. On a map, water nearly cuts the land in two here.
That gap once made Otahuhu a portage route, where Māori dragged waka overland between the two harbours. Portage Road still marks the route. The volcanic cone of Ōtāhuhu / Mount Richmond rises in the suburb, drawn as a rounded green shape among the streets.
