Outreau sits directly across the Liane from Boulogne-sur-Mer, on the higher ground south of the river mouth. On a map, its streets climb from the port and quays up onto a plateau, where residential blocks spread out in a looser pattern. The harbour basins below form a strong, geometric edge along the northern side of the town.
The Liane estuary and Boulogne's harbour define the town's position. Docks, quays and industrial areas line the water, while the western side of the commune looks out toward the English Channel. It is a place shaped by its neighbour's port, and the map shows that closeness very clearly.
