Pangkalpinang sits on the eastern side of Bangka Island, a short distance from the coast, and its map is shaped by low ground and water. The city is the capital of the Bangka Belitung Islands province, created in 2000 when it separated from South Sumatra. For centuries Bangka's economy has been bound up with tin, and Pangkalpinang grew as an administrative town for the mining industry; a tin museum in the city tells that story. Many residents have Chinese ancestry, reflecting generations of miners and traders.
