Parys lies on the southern bank of the Vaal River in the northern Free State, a short drive south of Johannesburg. From above, the river dominates the scene: it widens here into several channels divided by wooded islands, and the town's streets spread out on the flat ground beside it in a compact, regular grid.
Around the town rise the rugged hills of the Vredefort Dome, the eroded remains of the largest known meteorite impact structure on Earth, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On a map, the hills show as a band of rougher terrain crossed by winding roads, a clear contrast with the open farmland further south.
