Passos is a regional centre in the southwest of Minas Gerais, in a landscape of rolling hills, pasture and cropland. On a map the town appears as a roughly compact urban area. The streets follow the lie of the land, and small streams and green valley floors cut between neighbourhoods.
The older centre has a denser, more regular pattern of blocks around its main squares and church. Newer neighbourhoods on the edges follow curving roads laid out along the slopes. Highways lead away toward other towns in the region, and past the last streets the map opens quickly onto farms and fields.
