Great Falls
Near downtown the Passaic drops over a basalt cliff, one of the larger waterfalls in the eastern United States. It remains the focal point of the city plan.

La mappa
Paterson Map Poster & Print
The Passaic River defines Paterson. It swings around much of the city in a wide loop before heading south. At the Great Falls the river drops over a basalt ledge into a narrow chasm, and that drop is the reason the city was founded. On a map the falls sit close to downtown, with raceways and old mill blocks gathered around them.
In 1791 the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures, backed by Alexander Hamilton, chose this site for a planned industrial town powered by water. Paterson later became known as Silk City for its textile mills. The Great Falls district is now a national historical park, and the surrounding streets still follow the logic of raceways and factory lots.
Beyond the historic core, the grid runs in several directions at once, bent by the river and by Garret Mountain to the southwest. A Paterson map poster captures that tension between water and street pattern. It is a fitting piece for anyone with family roots in the mills, and for readers who know the city through the long poem William Carlos Williams named after it.

Raceway system
Channels built to carry water from above the falls to the mills shaped the streets of the historic district. Their lines can still be traced among the industrial blocks.
River loop
The Passaic bends around the city and forms a natural boundary. A series of bridges crosses it into neighbouring towns.

Perché Paterson
Una mappa che ha un significato
Paterson is a city people carry with them: the mills, the falls and the neighbourhoods their grandparents settled in. A black-and-white map lets the river and the old industrial grid speak for themselves, without the noise of a tourist print.
Choose a title and subtitle, such as a street name or a year, and personalise the coordinates line. The map comes in five styles, including Noir and Paper. Buy it as $9 HD files in six print sizes, or as a printed poster shipped from partners in over 30 countries.
