Pen is a town in Raigad district, Maharashtra, between the Konkan coast and the foothills of the Western Ghats, a couple of hours south of Mumbai. The Mumbai–Goa highway passes through it. From above, the town is a dense core of lanes beside the Bhogawati River, with newer streets spreading along the main roads.
Pen is known across India for its Ganesh idols. Many workshops in and around the town make clay and plaster figures of Ganesh each year for the festival, and a large share of them travel to Mumbai and far beyond. The trade gives the town its own rhythm, with activity building through the months before Ganeshotsav.
