Pepa lies in Tanganyika province in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the highlands inland from Lake Tanganyika. The land here is higher and cooler than the lake shore. Rolling grassland and valleys spread out around the town, and roads and paths follow the terrain instead of a straight grid.
From above, Pepa is a scattered settlement of houses, gardens and small plots. A few main routes link it to nearby towns and the lake. Streams cut through the surrounding hills, and the pattern of paths follows the ridges and slopes. The result is a map with more natural curves than most small towns have.
